F150 Speedo Nipple

Is there any harm in running the motor without the speedo nipple on the lower unit of a '12 F150? I've gone through 3 trying to reinstall the LU. Or better yet maybe replace the nipple with a stainless bolt to plug it. More often than not the inlet hole is plugged with debris resulting in the speedo not working anyway.
