Starting Outboards After Storage

I purchased a couple of Yamaha 50HP outboards (FT50CET) but due to unforeseen circumstances have been unable to use them until now. They have been in their crates for almost 3 years. I have now un-crated and unwrapped them and, as I would expect, they still look brand new. But I am wondering if there any special precautions or preparatory steps I should take before starting them up for the first time.

Well, I'd hook up the fuel line first, but that's about it.

Paranoia... Very paranoid...

If its 4-stroke, check the oil.
If its 2-stroke with oil injection check the oil...
If its 2 stroke pre-mix, make sure you have the right mix.
(not bothering to look up the engine)

Change the water pump impeller. (I said paranoid... this is paranoid)

Pull spark plugs.
A squirt of fogging oil in each cyl and down each carb barrel.
Wait a few minutes for that to self distribute.
Put the plugs back
Spin the engine a few seconds to further distribute oil

Now you're sure its well lubricated.

Hook up fuel and water (muffs, tank or float the boat)

*********

If its not suffering rust from long term storage in poor conditions you'll be fine, probably without the paranoia.

From his description they sound like brand new motors, and a Google search shows they are high thrust 4 strokes, so...

Make sure there's oil in the motor.

Motors sit on the dealers floor for this length of time frequently, nothing special is done before starting other than making sure there's oil in it.

Just because they were in a crate does not mean new.

they have to crate used motors to ship them too
usually have to drain oil and lower unit lube also so it can not leak while in transit

Check everything before you fire them up.
Get the muffs where water goes in both sides of lower unit.
Check motor oil, lower unit gear oil, fuel filters, grease all fittings,
If these are brand new motors, there is a factory break in procedure,if two stroke you need more two stroke oil in the beginning.
Re Torque head bolts after 20 hours.
