Hi all, I joined the boating world this year with a 1990 sweet 16 tracker. The boat was built to be a bass fishing style boat. The deck on the front is awesome for fishing but extremely heavy. Currently I have a 1991 evinrude 25 hp motor powering the boat. It can't quite make the boat plane causing it to top out at 13-17 mph depending if there is one or two people in the boat. It also causes it to push huge waves from the sides. My question is if I upgrade to a Yamaha 1993 Pro 50 HP, do you think it will be strong enough to get on plane? Also how much MPH would I gain? I know more info is probably required but if anyone has experience with this I'd love to know.
Thanks
-John

What's the hull rated for? 50hp should be plenty..... 40 should be plenty. From what I saw it only weighs 425......

With the added weight of the casting platform, no doubt the 25 is struggling. Rule of thumb is to go with 70% of rated HP. Being a 60 that means 42. Even with the extra weight, it is my opinion that if you have a line on a 50 it should work fine...

also depends on how much weight you are putting in the boat and the prop you are using to push it with

If its rated for 60 go for a 60. The Evinrude Etec 40,50 and 60 are the same basic motor. And the 60 hp version more efficiently develops its horse [power.A 60 will be loafing when running at the 40s speed.
You never see anyone say "I wish I had less horsepower".Find yourself a good 60.
