What is the proper Volvo procedure for adjusting the idle mixture on a 2 barrel Holley on a 4.3? I can't seem to find it in the factory service manual PDF I have. I assume it is set idle speed to 650 running in forward gear and then adjust the idle mixture to get the fastest RPM. My main confusion is there are 2 mixture adjustments. One on each side of the carb.

My boat is running great but occasionally stalls when I put it into gear after a warm start. I took it apart today to clean and rebuild and it looks new inside. Also, we probably will take the boat to lake Tahoe next spring and it most likely will need adjustment due to altitude.
.
thanks

both screws should be adjusted the same for idle mixture. my first suggestion would be look at the idle circuits. a small piece of crud is all it takes to mess up an idle circuit.

Thanks for the fast response. I removed the 2 mixture adjustment screws and both had crud on the ends of them. It was the only dirty part of the carb.

Volvo Penta 4.3l GL initial idle mixture setting is 5/8 turn off of seat.
Idle speed 650 RPM.

Thanks for the link. The first link was the one I needed. I was able to search the title and find a PDF.

Now I need to wait for my 2.5 power valve to get here. Lots of places would not ship a power valve to me due to CA emissions rules. Pretty silly as I am trying to make my boat run cleaner.

thanks

Well actually not really, without going into detail your carb need's need's a cleaning complete take down fully....For dirt to get caught in that part of the circuit it has to be in very bad shape.

Carb is torn down soaking now. It was not dirt on the needle. More of a deposit. My wild *** guess is the previous owner had carb rebuilt. The California shop he used was not legally allowed to remove/adjust the idle mixture screws so they left them alone. They were both at 5/8 turn and tamper proof plugs were still painted in place. From the PDF.

3.0GL-B, 4.3GL-C, 5.0GL-D, 5.7GL-D and later models
comply with California Air Resouce Board (CARB) emission
standards. If the engine will be used in California, the
idle mixture screw covers must not be removed. If the covers
are removed, the metering block must be replaced
before operating in California.

Next time you need a 2.5 power valve, check to see if Hot Rods of Norco or J&M speed center in Riverside CA has any to send you. I've had good luck finding them in Norco. http://www.worldskoolest.com/home.html ..... http://jmspeedcenter.com/

Got to love the California air resources board for finding ways to create revenue to support their creative ways to hold a job title.:(
