Volvo 4.3 engine color

I'm looking to purchase a 2004 Four Winns 180 with a Volvo 4.3 GL but the engine is black, not red?? Does this mean it has been replaced?

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... In a 10 year old hull, Ya, probably replaced,....

A compression test will tell ya it's general health,....

Sounds like it. Think they went red in 2001. See if the ID plate is on it and look it up on the volvo site. Cheers

My 01 is black. EDIT. Boat is an 01. Just found out engine is an 00.

On the official Volvo Penta eStore (part of this site) it appears the breakpoint is 2000 model year (and that's engine, not boat). My 2000 boat has a 1999 model year engine as the post above. I would guess very few internal changes in the base engine from 2000/charcoal to 2001/red. I think the next big changeover in the 4.3 for automotive useage was around 2008 when a key defining feature would be the aluminum front cover to replace the composite.
