I recently picked up my first boat and am working on fixing it up. My mechanical experience doesn't go much past tune ups, oil changes, and a few other issues I've fixed on my cars. I am having trouble determining exactly what Volvo Penta engine I have. I can not see any serial plates. There are some numbers on some of the parts, but none seems to give me any information. I'm wondering if anyone has some way to determine which one it is or to point me in the right direction to look.

I am also hearing a pretty loud kocking that you can here in the video. Any suggestions where to start to address on these engines? Thanks for any help.

Look for stickers on the engine itself. You can start with a model year, and then its pretty much going to be 3.0G.., 4.3G....5.0G...5.7G....7.4G....8.1G...or 5.0F...or 5.8F. with some more digits following. The first letter denotes Ford or GM base engine. The boat manufacturer can cross-reference back to the original bill of material with your Hull #.
