Hi
I have a twin installation with 2 pcs VP 205A and just checked the output of the alternators in connection with installation of a new electronic distributor on one of the motors. The reading is 13.8 V on one and 14.4 on the other - common battery bank but all measure with only one running at a time at app 800 rpm
Is the 14.4 V OK and will it not harm the electronic in the distributor

Hi there

14.4 Volt is the correct output for a healthy alternator, so I wouldn't worry.

Some years ago I installed electronic ignition on a pair of old OMC engines (Hot-spark). When the engines had run for more than two hours, they died when ideling and were impossible to restart, before they had cooled down. I later found out that one alternator was charging 14.8 Volt, so this was possibly the problem. During the long run, this minor over-charge had probably generated enough heat in the moduls to cause them to fail. I didn't do much investigation on the problem, since it was quite time consuming to re-create. Instead I removed the electronic modules and re installed the points, something I thought I would never do.......
