Volvo 260A/280

I have a volvo 260A engine with 280 sterdrive. The previous owner was told by his mechanic he could use a non detergent SAE 30 oil in the engine and sterndrive. What should i be using if this oil is not suitable? Previous owner has used this oil for years and has had no problem. It is motomaster non Detergent motor oil SAE 30. He was told that oil is oil and marketing is what makes the difference. What do you guys think and what oil do you reccomend? Is it safe to continue to use this oil?

You can use 10W30 in both, but most prefer gear oil in the 280. Don't spend too much time worrying about what oil. Todays oil is good stuff and multigrades are light years improved from back in the old days when straight weight was recommended. I prefer synthetic myself.

I have AQ290A engine,and using 10W30.
But for all AQ270-AQ290 oudrives diesel motor oil 15W40 is the best.

The 280 and 290 Single prop units are specified to use same weight as engine oil. The 280DP and 290DP DuoProp units specify 90wt gear oil. This may make a difference to some of the audience :wave:
