Re: slightly bent composite skeg

You can look at the skeg protector sites; they show their skegs basically replacing half-torn-off original pieces.

So you "could" just cut of the very minimum portion of the bent area with a saw, and then re-prime and paint to inhibit corrosion, and then install the protector.

You could "try" warming it up (carefully) and bending back enough with channel locks, a large c-clamp, or something similar, until it's straight enough to get the protector on. If you do so, you might want to do this with a wet towel on top to keep heat away from the internals, and a piece of wood backing the skeg area that you are trying to bend.

You don't want to start banging on it w/ a hammer....not good for internal parts/seals.

The material is thin, and therefore very prone to cracking once you try and bend back the other way.

Can you show us how much of it is broken, and how much is actually bent?

Also, if you hit something very hard, it may also bend the shaft the the prop is on; you may want to take the prop off, run the engine on muffs, and ensure that is absolutely no wobble on the shaft that holds the prop. If there is, it will eventually tear up internal parts and start to leak fluid....or tear up gears.

You can also search the main forums for "skeg" or "skeg repair" to get some ideas and pictures.
