96 Chaparral 5.0 302mpi volvo. hard start, dies

This is my neighbors boat, this weekend he finally got it in the water. Started fine on muffs, checked for leaks, good to go.....until....
he launched ( ran great) got about +-1 mile then sputtered and died. Would start idle rough then die as soon as in gear, I towed him in.

Things I checked, water separator some water not too bad, plugs, cap, rotor, (replaced) has VERY good spark, compression(good), fuel pump is running.

I am LOST on this one it is still hard to start idles like crap and dies.....

again 1996 Chaparral 5.0 302 mpi volvo drive.

Maybe a loose vacuum line or the distributor is loose and now timing is off?

OK, update.... fuel pump is working fine. Looks like it is the fuel pressure regulator. would run on ether loosing pressure in the rail. will update when part comes in

Ok Problem solved!!!!!!!!!!!!! Gas tank sending unit seal was bad, letting water into the tank. TONS of water in fuel 35 gallons of water/gas mix pumped out fuel rails emptied VIOLA!!!!!! runs like a champ. Guess it goes back to KISS (KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID)
