Volvo Penta 275 Outdrive Engine Compatibility???

I have a 1989 Baretta boat with a Volvo Penta AQ131D (120hp, 4 cylinder) and a 275 outdrive. The engine isn't working so well and i was hoping to swap it. What engine is compatible with this outdrive? Can I put in any 4 cylinder? Do I need a specfic gear ratio, rpm, hp, etc.?

Welcome, nice to see another baretta owner on the forum. Without creating too much more work, you're best off replacing the motor with another one of the same. It needs to be a volvo based motor or the rest of the drivetrain won't mount up.

What's wrong with the existing motor?

Thanks! Thats exactly what I needed to know. Currently the motor doesn't start. It won't even catch. We're finding numerous gaskets and seals that aren't OEM or the correct fittings. We haven't touched the motor so it must be from a previous owner. Probably just gonna go with a rebuild as the rest of the boat and outdrive are in good condition, and selling it is proving to be a challenge.
