I have a 1986 Volvo Penta 275 engine on my Bayliner and the trim will not go up or down. I can't find where to put hydraulic fluid in it; I'm thinking this might be the problem. Any suggestions?

Re: Volvo Penta 275 Trim

The 275 outdrive doesn't have hydraulic tilt and trim, just an electro-mechanical tilt for shallow water, idle speed operation and for launching/retrieving.

The tilt unit is at the back of the engine, and mounts in the transom shield. Looks like this.

Mechanical Lifting Device Drive Unit 275, Sp-A/Mt AQ131A, AQ131D - 7744650 - Volvo Penta

If you can locate the tilt mechanism, you can begin to troubleshoot. The electric motor, #36 in the diagram, could be bad, or you could have a wiring issue.

I'd start by finding the tilt unit. Once found, you can jump the motor directly to the battery to see if the motor is any good.

Let us know what you find.

Welcome to iboats, btw.
