SX-M Bearing cover

Seems to be a hot problem lately looking through the threads...

Recently replaced the Upper Bearing cover on my SX-M outdrive due to, I guess, an incorrectly installed helicoil in the threads for the dipstick by someone prior to my ownership.

This caused the dipstick (aka. indicator) to angle rather then go in straight resulting in the dipstick to break off right at the top. Getting that thing out of the leg was a challenge to say the least.
Problem solved with a new cover, shimming per the manual and a new dipstick.

I guess my question is are helicoils or inserts of any kind used in this part from manufacturing because this one had none in any of the threaded holes?

This makes the 2 bolts to attach the rear cover two small.

Any idea what size they are by chance?

No helicoils from the factory. All just threads in the aluminum.
If you don't have threads in the aft two holes that holds the cover on, then you got a defective part.

Thanks Don.

The aft holes that hold the cover on have threads in them.
Previous cover had helicoils in them too so guess new bolts are in order
Looks like these I guess:
Part 25 Screw 3852568

Re: SX-M Bearing cover

Well I thought this was solved when I ordered the replacement screws/bolts.
Didn't happen...
Volvo Bearing Cover P/N 3854401 was ordered and replaced but read on....

The screws/flange bolts are too small in diameter that I received but are the correct part number.
They were not stainless as were the others but some kind of anodized steel.
The upper bearing cover from Volvo is tapped at 3/8 inch and the screws/bolts supplied are 5/16 inch.
With a helicoil insert the new screws/bolts would work but why do that????????

Gotta love Volvo Penta parts inventory as a DIY maintainer for small "carp" like this

What a PITA.....

Anyone else ever have this exact problem with these bearing covers and screw/bolts??

Is it possible to convert from a Volvo 4.3 to a Merc 4.3 with no expense spared??

This run around with VP parts is really more then I want to deal with for just a pleasure craft.

Any or all comments are welcome....

Especially yours Don.
