I filled up the drive with oil and when i put the drain plug back in i put the oring on the drain plug and than screwed it in. The way i believe i should have done it is put the oring on the drive than put in the drain plug screw. My question is. according to the way i installed the oring Is it possible that the oring could get caught on the thread while screwing it in or does it self adjust as i turn and adjusts to the pocket it sits in?

Put the oring on the plug, there is a recessed area just above where the threads start, made just for the oring. As you suspected, putting it in the drive first will allow it to get caught up in the threads. It needs to be the "last" thing to touch the drive as the plug is installed.
