I have a 99 Monterey 180M with a Volvo 4.3GL-PWTC/SX stern drive.
The trim up/down toggle switch on the throttle works but it will stick
in the up position sometimes because (it feels like) the spring that makes
it a momentary switch (i.e. returns it to off) is weak.
This means that you have to be very careful when trimming up to ensure
the switch returns to neutral.....otherwise you can be running along under power
try to trim a little and then drive might start to trim full up......happened once to me! :disillusionment:
So a couple of questions:
1. Is the throttle handle assembly a volvo part...or does each boat manufacturer source their own?
I am assuming it is a volvo part but I can't find the answer.
2. Is there any diagrams available with part # breakdowns for the throttle/shift/trim handle assembly?
I have searched through the part listing on the iboats volvo store with no success.
3. Are there replacement parts (up to and including the entire assembly) available anywhere?
4. Has anyone had any success breaking down and rebuilding the portion of the handle with the trim switch in
it?
I have thought of a couple of non-intrusive (to the throttle anyway) solutions:
1. A separate trim-enable switch momentary button - this doesn't fix the sticking just the "stay on" portion of the
problem. it would switch on/off the power to the throttle trim switch. It has the problem of possible requiring 2 hands to operate.
2. A piece of foam stuck on the top of the trim switch that would add downward force to the switch. This has the
possible problem of forcing the switch in the down position but that is better than up. But this solution is a little too much duct tape engineering for me.
Any insight or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
