I have a volvo penta 3.0l with SX-a drive. On the trim cylinder, The scraper/wiper seal was damaged over the winter and I need to replace to it. The actual hydraullic seals seem fine, My 1st question is to open the cylinder do I just need to pop the retaining clip out or is there something else holding it?

Where would you recomend I buy a scraper seal, looking on line volvo do not have seal replacements.

Any help is appericated, thank you

Re: Volvo Penta SX-A drive trim cylinder Seals

So I replaced all the seals in the cylinder , here's the how to do it guide. Buy the seals from a hydraulic specialist, I used P&M Hydraulics in MD tel: 4106737220 but you could use someone local. What you need for 1 cylinder is DA17-0160, AS231E-10B, MPS-32X2X1-B5, 121 O-RING and power steering fluid. Remove the pressure lines from the cylinder by cutting the zip tie and opening the socket head screws securing the hydraulic lines. Be careful if there is pressure on you lines as the fluid will be under pressure . You will have to pull the hydraulics pipes out of the ram. Open the cotter pins securing the ram pins in position. Slide the pins securing the ram to the boat out. You now have the cylinder off. Remove all the oil from the ram by pumping the ram in/out. I left my ram stand vertically for about 3 days with WD40 floating in the top where the seal was. This is because my retaining rings were seized and would not rotate. I tapped the retaining ring around so that one end was aligned close to the side holes in the ram. Get a pin Dia .115" max x .35 length min (basically get a small dowel) , I also put a 70deg chamfer on the end of the pin. Insert the pin into a the top side hole on the cylinder. Using a vice, squeeze the pin into the hole, this will push the retaining ring inwards. The chamfer will push the retaining ring up as it moves in. You can try pry the ring out with a screw driver, this did not work for me. So while the retaining ring was pressed in and up a little, I inserted about .06" pin x .125" long into the groove area where the end of the retaining ring was. I opened the vice, the retaining ring could not pop back in place as the .060 pin was in the groove, I then tapped the ring around from the under end, the .06" force the ring up and inwards as it rotated and out came the retaining ring. You can then pull the ram apart. After that, its very obvious what to do, however the new rings are very stiff, and hard to insert. You will need to heat them to soften them, boil a cup of water containing the rings in a microwave, apply lots of marine grease and take your time. Then put it together the same way. You will need to fill the ram using power steering fluid at normal fill area on the pump housing.

Re: Volvo Penta SX-A drive trim cylinder Seals

Thanks for providing those seal numbers. I am having trouble with the AS231E-10B. I can't seem to identify it with any numbers provided by seal companies. Is that definitely the correct number? Thanks;
Rod.

According to the P&M invoice the number is correct, unless their S is a 5. So try A5231E-10B. If this is not correct then you could call P&M Tel 4106737220. They could post you the seal. The other option is to take the ram apart and bring it o a hydrauliic repair shop.

Thanks. I'll take it apart and work from there.
