Proper grease for outdrive prop hub spline etc. VP 280

[cheechako]

Jus t wondering what the proper grease to use on the prop hub spline is. Also, what to use on bolts in the outdrive... like zinc b olts etc to keep them from freezing up.

I've always used plain ole Permatex gasket sealer on the drive bolts on salt water bolts and never had one corrode.

I use anti-seize compound. It works well in fresh water, but not sure about salt water. If your looking for a light lubricant for bolts, automatic transmission fluid has anti corrosive additives.

In salt water, anti-seize is commonly known as Ever-seize. In fresh water, a bit of oil, grease, or nothing at all works.

salt water. The screws for my prop and ring zinc came out ok, but thedogbone zinc is held fast. I know some greases arent very compatible with aluminum so want to avoid those. Been a sailboater most my life (but into the faster breed...) and the best (non lubricating) thing I found to use on SS + aluminum was lanolin. Considered anti seize for the prop spline, but not sure it's compatibility with alum housing.

Like I said, the gasket sealer works great for all those bolts.

PS, probably one of the few that knows what a cheechako is without hitting google. I was one in 93, in Ketchikan.

I like BRP Triple Guard grease for the prop spines.

I guess you could say I was one in the late 50's here in Wa State!

Yes, it will bond aluminum to stainless steel like it was welded together.

Everseize is good for cars and trucks, but has no place on a boat.

I think they do make make a Marine version of Never Seize but I never bothered. The other stuff has copper in it and that's what causes the problems, I think.

Don, how do you like Perfect Seal by Merc? I never tried the Aviation Permatex but have heard good things about it.

Basically the same thing, I have used more Perfect Seal than Permatex.
