Brother in law has this boat and when he is running and starts to trim the motor, the gauges go haywire and the engine starts to cough, sputter and backfire. He read somewhere that it might be a 'hot' wire or something that needed to be replaced but not too sure. Any help would be appreciated..

Additional info, the problem only exists when trimming up/down while running... once you release the trim button, the problem does not happen.
