I have a 2002 volvo penta SX-M outdrive and my housing assembly is cracked from my u joints exploding (prior owner). I need a housing assembly and yoke BAD. I have found one for sale locally, but its a 1995 SX. I need to know if its interchangeable? He is giving me the housing assy. outdrive and prop. I have done some research and it looks like anything 1993-94 or newer should fit? Maybe? Need help before I buy parts that I cant use. Thanks, Bobby

Don,
Here is the pics of my outdrive. I also found the serial number on the Transom Shield. Hope this helps
Type SX-MLT
Production 3868845
Serial # 411680662

I would like to know what year Transom Shield will bolt right up. I'm looking to buy a replacement/used Transom Shield from craigslist or Ebay. Everything I see says Volvo SX. Is That the same as a SX-M?
Any info would be helpful. Thanks

I just finished rebuilt a 1995 SX M and from the looks of your picture it should not be a problem to use the transom shield from the 1995 that is for sale. You don't mention the ratio of the outdrive that is for sale so I can't say unless it is also a 1.97.
I am attaching a pic of my 1995 transon shield for you to look at.

Willocreek1202, Nice job on the rebuild. Looks GREAT! Hopefully mine will be running by spring. Still looking for parts. I Called dealer today for prices on Transom shield. Not good, $1300 for shield only. I need to find a good use one.

Here is the finished pictures of the outdrive and the 1995 Chris Craft. I'll keep an eye open for a used transom shield.

Willocreek1202, Did you rebuild outdrive yourself? What did you have invested $$$$ in parts? My outdrive is locked up...Its looking like a total rebuild!

I know a R&R of the broken parts is the correct way but.... Can you grind down the transom shield to remove all broken pieces? Would you have enough meat left to attach bellows... Or is it cracked down inside where your bearing is? Just a thought...

90Stingray, That is not a bad idea! I thought I needed the lip on there for the bellows to attach. Its already trashed so let me do some grinding and see how far the damage goes. Im guessing you have a Stingray also, Mine is a 2002 Stingray 4cyl Volvo with a broken SX-M outdrive. THANKS for the help!

Hello Bob,

I ran some numbers and it appears that you should be good, the replacement upper gear unit numbers from the early sx-s and sx-c show that they are directly replaced by the later model sx-m part number so I do not see that being an issue. Let me know if your guy does not come through, I may have a good used empty housing.

All the best,

Mike

Hello Bob,
When I read your original message it sounded like you needed the upper drive housing so that's what I looked into. I know the outer plate from the sx-c (and any sub variant) is interchangeable with an sx-m but I am not sure with regards to the sx-s, also be aware that you have a limited trim transom, so if you have a swim platform or something else above that sterndrive be sure to use your original limited trim cylinders so you do not have any issues with putting the drive up into or through anything :).

I do have a stingray... but I will be selling her in the spring. I have moved to a glastron. Both are mercruiser setups. I hope you get your boat fixed tho. I am also curious if you can grind down that area and save you some cash...

Yes Sir, I'm going to give it a try this weekend. I bought some new bellows so I can keep test fitting it as I grind away damage. Hope damage doesn't travel to far down the flange that my bellow mounts on! I will keep you up to date.

Re: Volvo Penta SX Housing assembly CRACKED

You can't grind off the bad section and make it work. The portion the bellows attaches to is half gone already. If you notice the groove in the housing on the lower portion that isn't missing, that is the groove the bellows sets in.

Did'nt know that Don. I was thinking the bellow clamped futher forward with a radiator style clamp..
Anybody know where to find used ones? The cheapist I found was $989 New.

Re: Volvo Penta SX Housing assembly CRACKED

Yes I did the rebuild. As far as cost depends on many things. I had to replace the sliding clutch and did a reseal on everthing.
My total cost on the outdrive was less than 400.00. Beware this does not include the cost for special tools. Make sure you have a good manual, use marine products always, and find out way it's locked up. Then get out your wallet. Have fun.

Re: Volvo Penta SX Housing assembly CRACKED

Well guys, I just broke down and bought a Transom assy. of eBay. Wasn't to bad, had to spend $1300 for the part with a new engine cuppler. My cuppler had a yoke broke off inside of it. A mechanic friend told me that is what happens when you leave the foot in the UP position and FLOOR it. You always find more damage when you start taking things apart. Should be putting the boat back together next weekend. Thanks for all the help!:D
