I bought a used lower unit off ebay. It was advertised as a 1990 290. I recently got it and there is a ridge on the prop shaft before the bearing housing. I dont see other 290's with that. I bought a 280/290 fish line protector/spacer. and it doesnt go on the shaft far enough. Am I missing something? is there a special model of 290 lower unit or something with this ridge on it?? I also has a shorter countershaft and longer splined sleeve. This is planned to go on a 270 intermediate housing

Re: Volvo 290 lower unit

Hello: If it is a 1990 then most likely it came from a DPA drive. No problem there though as the remarkable thing about the AQ series is that you can use the lowers through out the AQ line.

Many people make the mistake of calling later models, 290's for some reason. I have even heard some people refer to them as large pin 290's but try and get the right parts when you have a DP-C and and order 290 parts.

Anyways on to your problem.

Glad you ordered a line cutter as it is also used as a thrust washer, some have the washer snapped in and some are designed with it incorporated into it. You should see a hub of a prop and a carrier that is used with out the line cutter / thrust washer.

There is no special model of 290 with a ridge. The line cutter should slide right over and encompass the bearing carrier.

Can you post a picture?

Bill

OH BY THE WAY... Make sure you shim the lower to the intermediate. The bearing race should have been sent with the used lower unit. If not then purchase a NEW race to insert in the intermediate and SHIM IT ACORDINGLY. You may need another coupler depending on the actual model lower you have

Heres a pic. Its def a single prop and you can see the ridge on the prop shaft that doesnt allow the 290 line cutter to go back all the way. Along with the shorter countershaft and longer splined sleeve. I'm thinkin its actually an SP-A1 lower. Just hoping it will still go onto a 270 intermediate! Are the SP-A1 props still the long hub style? I now know they have a different line cutter but cant find one to buy.

Re: Volvo 290 lower unit

I apologize, I thought you were refering to a DP.

That year you are most likely right in saying it is a SP-A1

It will mate to the 270, just make sure it is shimmed and use the lowers original race.

Here is what I see in the SP-A exploded view in regards to items needed when installing the prop.
40 ? Line Cutter 839423
1 $68.60
41 ? Spinner 854045
1 $53.94
42 ? Spacer Washer 854047
1 $29.17
43 ? Plastic Washer 850888
1 $5.30
44 ? Screw 850889
1 $12.75

Here is what I see for a SP-A1 as there weree manyy changed from SP-A to the SP-A1

37 ? Line Cutter 872082 1 $66.85
38 ? Spinner 854045 1 $53.94
39 ? Plastic Washer 850888 1 $5.30
40 ? Screw 850889 1 $12.75

Hope this helps
