Today's status update... I built up a frame and took her off the engine stand so I can begin working on the flywheel side of things:

I also cleaned up and primed the flywheel cover, starter, and carb:

It's a good idea to take the alternator and starter to the local rebuild shop to have them check them out before everything is back in the boat. They MAY be able to install screens in the alternator to make it acceptable for marine use.

Great progress and thanks for sharing photos.

Since I am always overly "cautious", I would put a cross brace (or just a piece of plywood screwed between the front or rear legs) to provide some diagonal (torsional) rigidity on that nice stand. You might not use it a lot, but it would by a shame to see the engine on the ground due to a collapsed stand.

Not that we expect or want leaks, I personally prefer the "Volvo" red over the Mercruiser black on an engine. So much easier to see when/if things are starting to go wrong. Never understood why Merc paint their blocks black for that very reason.
But that was a side track - Keep up the good work!!!!

I cleaned the bilge this weekend. No pictures but it's almost ready for new paint and wiring.

Final painting is complete on the flywheel cover and starter:

And the carb is installed:

Waiting on the arrival of my primary bearing, seals, flywheel bolts, various o-rings and also a new marine alternator.

What Marinized Auto Engine from Volvo can I swap parts for a 1983 Volvo Penta AQ125A? I heard you can use parts from a same year Volvo 244 DL. Pleased confirm or advise what the 1983 Volvo Penta AQ125A is compatible with.

nic420,

Start a new thread for that. You'll get better help, and can guarantee that more questions will follow once you've gotten your first answers :)

While cleaning up the clamping ring with a wire-wheel I noticed a hairline crack at one of the bolt holes. It goes all the way around. So, I just ordered a new clamping ring kit (#854315) for $50 + $15 shipping.

You found that cheap. Used from ebay or do you have a super cheap supplier?

That poor distributor... looking like a second-class citizen on this motor now.

Get some rebuilders silver, will look like new.

Okay, here's today's update. I created a new bilge block, all edges cut on 45* and sanded smooth:

I mixed up some peanut butter, set it, and glassed it in with matte and 6oz. I'll get some finished pics of that tomorrow. I picked up some interlux bilgekote (white) and will be prepping for that tomorrow.

I put a new primary drive shaft bearing, seals, and snap rings into the flywheel cover. The new flywheel bolts also came in (local volvo dealer) so I got the flyweel and absorber installed, along with the flywheel cover:

In the picture above, you can also see tube for the new Oil Drain kit I installed in the pan.

The heat exchanger came in yesterday from Seakamp Engineering, so I got that primed and painted today:

I also cleaned up the copper raw tubes (from the old engine). They cleaned up real nice down to shiny copper, then I primed and painted them:

(Also shown there is the coil bracket, and the S-bracket for the raw pump)

More to report after tomorrow...

Can you do mine this winter :)

I've got a question and comment.
The rear bellhousing and driveshaft snout.
Can that only go on one way?
The very end has an offset, I suppose to help the bellows not kink when tilting up.
On mine, the snout seems to be " "clocked" wrong
I can't tell for sure in your picture.

And, motor mounts, did your boat have them as original equipment?

Why didn't you save the oil pan?

One is enough for me. You'll have to do your own. ;)

I think it can only bolt up one way. The flywheel cover on mine has a fitted shroud on one side for the starter.

Not sure about original equipment but the previous engine had two front mounts.

The old oil pan was pretty dented and I had no use for it. Those are cheap at the auto yard, so not worth much.

Timing belt re-install hint...
My boat would not run unless timing is set to 30 degree DTDC.
I finally pulled the fron accories off to look at the timing belt.

My boat has a car engine.
The index marks for aligining the timing belt for a car are on the rear timing belt cover.
I see it one of your early pics.

Once you throw that away, there is nothing to line up the balance shaft and camshaft gear !!

Getting the timing belt on correctly the first time can be done with the painted lines on the belt itself.
But checking it later is impossible.

Another hint.
Before putting the camchaft gear on, put another dimple on the rear so you can see it from the rear.

The balance shaft as you call it is not a balance shaft and only drives the distributor so its alignment is not critical. I thought the cam pulley lines up with a mark on the valve cover does it not?

What is DTDC? If you meant BTDC, 30? is not correct. I wonder if you are measuring it correctly.
