What needs to be done with a Volvo Penta Outdrive 290 that kicks up when placed in reverse. This boat is a dual engine 260A (Small block Chevy) mated to the 290 outdrives. The starboard drive is the one that kicks up while the port side stays down. Currently the trim/tilt for these 290's are NOT working I will be fixing them at a later date. I just want to stop the starboard drive from going up. Any help/advice will be greatly appreciated....

Re: 290 Volvo Penta Outdrive kicks up in Reverse

There are a few things that could cause the retaining pawl not to hold the outdrive when reversing. It sounds like your running a houseboat, so pulling it out of the water to check it out is tough, I imagine.

If you're not using the trim at all, you may have to just get in the water and tie the outdrive to the transum shield to hold the outdrive from kicking up. I can't imagine being able to fix it correctly without pulling the boat out of the water...

Good luck!
