I have a 1972 Glastron with a 170AQ connected to a 270 outdrive. Aside from the typical Volvo quirks, it doesn't seem to go into gear soon enough. When I shift from neutral to forward or reverse, the engine rpms will go up before it goes into gear, which makes for a very abrupt gear engagement. I know it has to be something simple so I am appealing to the Volvo folks out there for help. TIA.

David

Sounds like a cable that is getting stiff. Need to unhook the ends and manually push and pull them. If they move hard, then you may need to replace it. The cable should move freely within the cable housing. That was the problem I had with my Volve until I changed out the cable.

That makes sense. The shift cable is probably hanging up while the throttle cable is free, causing engine to speed up before shift takes place. I will check it next time I'm at the lake.

Thanks, David
