Sounds like if you would have installed a fuel pressure gauge and monitored that when the problem was occurring like Don mentioned at the beginning you would have caught a fuel pump problem a long time ago, if that is what it truly turned out to be.
Are you saying you had a 6 volt pump on this thing?

Here's the answer, the new shop R&Rd or adjusted:

1. Replaced the fuel pump. Specs:
old 7.8V new 18.0V

I'm not sure what this shop is telling you with those voltage readings (7.8V and 18V) , you have a mechanical fuel pump, no electric at all. Here is a picture of your
3.0L Merc/Volvo engine with the mechanical fuel pump and fuel line in red.

This thread is still a waste of bandwidth because the original poster knows nothing about anything, not even enough to know he has a 3.0L, not a 4.3. So explaining possible testing procedures and how to troubleshoot problems is a waste of time.
