Volvo aq 130 problem please help

hi all i have a 1968 volvo aq130 or b20 4cy heres the deal when i got this motor it was locked up so with alittle work i got broke free. rehoned the cylinders. lapped the valves back in. threw her together and she started up nice. now heres when i gets wierd. when i put the water muffs on she will run for hours. when i decied to take her to the lake as soon as i drop the i/o in to the water she refuses to even start can someone please tell me what is going on ive also started it right before i put her in the water and she chugs out and wont start. any help would i would be great full for

Sounds like even the slight load of backpressure on the exhaust is causing it to stall. Either that or it's afraid of water!

What were the compression readings after the work?

Assuming the plugs, wires, cap, rotor, coil, and points are all in good shape, first thing I'd check is the timing. If that checks out, go after the fuel system.
