Hello.

I recently purchased a boat and have noticed a high pitched whine that kicks on and off. I'm not sure if this is normal or something I need to be concerned about.

The motor is a 1997 Volvo Penta 5.7l Gli that has no problem making plenty of power and runs great. It did sit for about a year and a half before my purchasing it.

At low power I don't hear the whine. I notice it after running at higher power settings. It stays on for 30 seconds or so after running at cruise and slowing to idle, then it kicks off, just like a pump would turn on and off. Sometimes it's on for a short period of time immediately after start. It's not a bilge pump, I've checked those.

Any ideas? Thanks for input!

Check your level in your power steering pump, but then again you could have a bearing on its way out, keep an eye out as it can only get worse eg alternator bearing, idler pulley etc.
