Volvo 270 Outdrive Shifting

Shifting my 270 is stiff, so I replaced the shift cable with a new one and it is still the same, plus I have the engine idle speed set at 900rpm and when it does go into gear it is not smooth.
I have disconnected shift cable and can rotate the shifter on the drive by hand easy and the cable moves freely too.

Any ideas of what this could be and how it can be improved?

I have the same setup and symptom. I heard the wrong oil or old oil can have this effect. Today, I am changing the oil. 30wt engine oil.

Thanks for your reply, I have new oil and it is 30w 10. I do have the oil level at the top mark on the dipstick. I wonder if this may have something to do with it.

Manual says to not have the dipstick screwed in when you measure level.
Well, I've been trying to get the drain plug off and can't. Tried an impact hand hammer thing with screw driver tip, tried a piece of angle iron with an adjustable wrench. I'd rather not use heat as I just painted the drive a few weeks ago! I don't want to highjack your post so will post this as a new item.
