Volvo Penta 4.3GL Trim Repair

Ok im new to boating so im not sure where to start on this. My trim works up and down but does not register on the gauge. I found a small wire taped at the outboard but not sure where it goes. Can anyone help me out. Is there supposed to be a sensor on the hydraulic arms?

There are many experts floating in this forum; I'm not one of them. However, you are on the right track. That is the sending unit that communicates the trim position to the gauge. Who knows if it is the sender or the gage, or some other electrical problem, but you're in the area. Go to www.volvopentastore.com and look at the parts diagrams for the outdrive; you'll see a part number if it is a replacable part....
