I had to replace my shift cable just a couple weeks ago. It's pretty easy. You need to figure out what length you need. My cable was less than $40.
Only one cable and not the tricky adjustment like the mercs.
One thing you may want to try before buying the cable, go out and remove the shift cover on the drive. disconect the shift cable and try shifting it by hand. You should be able to shift into forward and reverse easily by hand.
Make sure there is a washers between the cotter pin and linkage. Those can bind sometimes.
If you can find some numbers on your current shift cable, post them and we may be able to figure out what you've got.
