Yesterday was out on the water with my '94 Wellcraft 243 w/volvo penta 5.7GS. Great day...ran super. Coming home I had to shift to neutral at a channel. When I went to shift back to forward...nothing. Shifted to reverse...all normal. Back to forward and it stuttered...like it didn't quite engage. Then it went into gear and ran ok til I got close to the dock and shifted back to neutral. Again..no forward.
In short..I could get it into forward by moving the shift lever way forward...with high rpm. Reverse was fine.
So...had the marina guy pull the boat...Called me this morning saying it looked like I had gotten a piece of fishing line wrapped around the prop shaft and took out the seal...letting water into the system. Found no evidence of metal shavings...but said could cost up to $1000 to fix it. Seems a little steep if you ask me.
I had him remove the props and rework them this last winter. Any chance the seal was damaged when he replaced the props? I don't know what to think.
