volvo penta 270 thottle will not reverse

Looking for suggestions: 1985 bayliner capri 2.1 with a volvo penta 270. While at the lake this weekend the thottle became hard to pull into reverse, then as the day went along the throttle would not move into reverse at all.
Any suggestions,

Sounds like your shift cable is failing somewhere. More than likely where it attatches at the sterndrive.

Check the gear lube. Make sure it's not milky (water) or burned (?????)

Thanks for the quick reply, stupid on my part I should have checked a little closer. When I went to take a closer look at the stern connection a rock was lodged under the lock collar. The shifter is working both directions again.

Should the Pentas be hard to put into reverse while engine off on trailer?
Trying to find out before we go to the lake. Everything seems great in the forward postion.
Hard to put into reverse, and I did not know if the engine needs to be running for that???
