Hey Guys,
I'm about to swap out a busted Gimbal bearing and bellows on a Volvo Penta 260a with a 280 outdrive. This is on an 85 24' Bayliner Ciera Command Bridge.

Has anyone on here done this, or a similar job, that could lend me some expertise? I've been told from some sources that the engine needs to be pulled to get at the gimbal bearing, others say you might be able to just remove the outdrive to get at it with a slide hammer.

If anyone has any input on this it would be GREATLY appreciated as I'm about to bring her into the shop next weekend to do the work.
If I'm posting in the wrong place please feel free to let me know!

welcome aboard

your going to have a heck of a time changing the gimble bearing......... because there is no gimble bearing on a 280 drive

there are pivot pins and a steering helmet and the PDS bearings

if you need to remove the PDS bearings, then yes, you need to pull the motor.

here is a write-up I did on my 290 when I re-did my PDS http://forums.iboats.com/forum/engi...s-engines-outdrives/10343318-pds-shaft-issues

You'll want to download a service manual too.
