1993 Cobalt Volvo Penta Tilt Problem

My outdrive tilted all the way up on its own as I was in a slow turn. Would not trim back down. After being towed in I disconnected alI connections to the tilt motor. After re-connecting all connections it appears to be working fine. What would make it tilt up on its own and stick there?
