Thermostat fell out of housing

I pulled my thermostat housing and the thermostat had fallen out of it, and it was laying inside the intake directly below the housing. Lucky I checked it.... found the rubber o-ring too.

Any idea what would cause this? What can I do to prevent it in the future? The only thing keeping it in is that rubber oring.

wrong thermostat perhaps. Not sure how that is possible. What engine? Pics?

If there is corrosion in the thermostat housing, it is possible the o-ring could not be installed deep enough into its slot.

I would bet that you have corrosion in the O ring grove. You might take a small wire wheel brush and try to clean it out a bit.

Yep that makes the most sense, unless whoever installed it last, did not make sure it got all the way in the groove. Usually its hard to get it OUT of that groove lol....
