I just received a boat. It has a Volvo Penta AQ131A motor in it. With a 275 outdirve. I am new to boats and want to get this thing started before I winterize it. I wasnt sure if the previous owner tried to start it with the gas that is funked up in the tank so i removed the hose and got some fresh fuel and tried starting it with that from a can. The motor sounds good turning when i try to start it but it just Wont start. its an 1986 bayliner trophy. I have no idea how long it was sitting in the field or anything. It sounds like it wants to start but just wont. Any suggestions or help. Thanks!

First thing to check, is any gas getting to the carburetor.
With no special testing, do this CAREFULLY.
Remove the carb spark arrestor from the top (looks like an air filter.

Get a teaspoon of gas, and pour it into the carb
Replace the spark arrestor.
Put gas can about 100 feet away from boat.
Try starting.
An alternative is the spray can of starting fluid, but you need to be more careful with that process.
Spray a single shot of starter fluid (one second at most) into the spark arrestor.
Toss the can about 100 feet away
Try starting

If no joy, you need to check for spark.
You need a good test light for this part.

You have muffs on when you are running the boat right? In addition there is a hole in the nose of the outdrive you need to plug when running on muffs so you don't suck air in.

Never use starting fluid. You can ruin your engine. Use gasoline only.

Replace the points, rotor and possibly spark plugs and try again.
