I'm doing a tune up on a 2003 Campion with a Volvo Penta Red Block 5.7 GXI and I have the NGK BPR6EFS spark plugs and the old plugs are the exact same and I checked the gap on them and they all have a .045 gap and the engine tag states .060 so my question is do I follow the .060 with the NGK? Also I just purchased this boat and I took it out to the lake and it ran crappy when it passed 3500 rpm and would bogged down but only if the engine was warm. I found 1 spark plug with a gap of .050 so I'm not sure if that would cause a problem with that cylinder miss firing as the others were set at .045

Woops my mistake, thought you were the VP guy. Who here is the guy, maybe JerryJerry05 ?
The problem is that after 2000 and the red engines started, you have to know the serial number and have a way to look up info like that.

muc is the best person for those years.

BTW, should probably check to make sure that NGK BPR6EFS is the proper plug for that engine. 0.45 is the correct plug for that spark plug however.

I do know that Volvo has changed recommendations on plugs on many of these engines to the AC iridium plugs that are pre-gapped at 0.60. I would not be gapping those NGKs to 0.60.

Hey guys thanks for your response! It sounds like I will change them for the Ac iridium that have the pre .060 gap just to be safe.

I would still confirm with your serial number to what is recommended for your engine.

Without a S/N can only give general advice.
You should never change the gap on a spark plug more than .003
With any iridium, never change the gap. GENTLY check it and toss or return the plug if it isn't in spec.

By chance is there a spark plug part number next to the plug gap size on the engine mounted info sticker?

If the engine uses the HVS (High Voltages Switch = "Flat Dissy Cap") ignition system like it sounds like it does, then typically from new the engine came with either platinum spark plugs or iridium plugs which would require the .060 gap and those designed plugs were/should/maybe still gapped at .060 from the factory and due to how easily they can be damaged during re-gapping, the plug manufacturer recommends not re-gapping them only "carefully" checking them to see if they're still at .060 from new.

One of the few OEM platinum or iridium designed spark plug part numbers used by Volvo over the years should be Volvo part number 21467472 which today turns into AC-Delco part number 41-101 like seen here for example, http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=21467472 and available through iboats too,http://www.volvopentastore.com/Ignit...-viewcart.long

Though with this "ignition system" the correct recommended platinum or iridium plug should really be used for best overall confidence and performance, one of the other option for this "engine block" that is said that you could get away with using is the standard designed spark plug vs the platinum or iridium which would require the use of the long reach spark plug of either NGK BPR6EFS or AC-Delco MR43LTS which then Mercruiser recommends the gap to come down to .045 which is still okay to adjust the standard plug like we're used to doing back in the old days with less concern.... All the while I believe Volvo says to still leave the gap at .060 for either/any design plug according to this post....http://forums.iboats.com/forum/engin...36#post3944136
Merc pretty much says .045 for the standard plug, Bulletin No. 2006-03 - JustAnswer
http://www.ebay.com/itm/AC-DELCO-Mer...-/121166664139

The reason I mentioned the plugs "were/should/maybe" still gapped at .060 is due to some of the newer iridium plugs coming from GM / AC-Delco used in the later model GM vehicles a number of us here may drive are now coming pre-gapped at .040 and are to be run at .040 even if the sticker/manual says to gap at .060...More info in the following link on that subject if needed, http://www.performancetrucks.net/for...um-gap-481066/

Item number 15 (21467472) is your OEM spark plug part number, http://www.volvopentastore.com/Igni...on_id.969802511--store_id.366--view_id.769071

Using the spark plug number found on the sticker (3851632) unfortunately doesn't get you to far online at finding what it was or finding a good cross reference but AC-Delco part number 41-101 which will be gapped at .060 from new is one to use. http://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/topic/106559-plug-gap-help/

Here's your complete parts guide for you through iboats, just be sure the parts page you click on reads 5.7GXi-E, http://www.volvopentastore.com/Mari...on_id.969802511--store_id.366--view_id.765122

Thanks for the information! I found that the AcDelco Iridium 41-993 will work with this as they are pre-gapped at .060 so I think I found the correct plugs unless someone says different. Thanks again for everyone's help!
