How big a job is replacing this engine?

The Volvo parts are crazy expensive.
Any other parts left?
The flywheel(800$) could be a problem? The flexplate or coupler a problem.
They used a light duty 350 with a special crank that only their products work on.

Myself I'd pass or change it to a Mercruiser, or buy a boat with a Mercruiser in it.
Stay away from ANY Cobra or OMC

If the PDS housing is there along with the brackets and accessories, then go for it. If not, I would pass

Part of my question is to help me understand the work involved, though the pricing info is good too. I'm used to outboard work, not I/O. I'm mostly using this boat as an example.

Is it an easy thing, work wise, to swap something like this to a mercruiser? Do they generally fit through the same hull openings or do I have to do modifications to make it fit right?

No, the AQ series of VP drives ( like the 280 VP ) has a much larger transom cutout than a mercruiser.

Other than that, if you have clear overhead and a hoist, it's an hour job

I would pass. Wants to much for it not running and who knows what is missing.

Agree with the OMC comment but Do a search for VP parts. They are NOT that much more then a Merc.
The coupler (Damper Plate) can be bought from MM for $90 bucks new
Fly Wheel is $199.00 from MM
The crank shaft is just a standard normal SBC crank nothing special at all.
But if your refuring to GM engine parts only working with a GM crank then i would agree.

The crank used in the 80's Chevy Volvos was different than a regular crank.
The end looked different than the one in the pic.
Kinda oblong and took a certain flywheel.

In 1986 Chevy switched to a 1 piece rear main seal crankshaft.
The 1 on the left is a 1 piece and the right one is a 2 piece rear main seal. So in 86 everyone had to switch to the 1 piece style unless they had old stock but after that ran out they had to switch to new style.
Nothing special about VP crankshaft's they are standard chevy production cranks. The switch to a 1 piece rear main seal made a different fly wheel necessary for all boat builders using the sbc engine.
It does not matter where the fly wheel comes from for the most part VP, Merc, Early 80's camaro. It just needs to be 12'3/4in and if i remember correctly 153 tooth.

That's what I was talking about.
The flywheels are different too.
I found the wheels from a v-6 Camaro are the ones that work.
I used to have the part #s but when I left the Volvo dealer they went by the wayside.
