Trying to set initial timing. I have the procedure down, but the manual says there is a timing scale attached to the timing chain cover and timing marks on the harmonic balancer.... I see neither. The harmonic balancer has 2 dimples that look like they were made with a half inch drill... I'm thinking tdc and 8 degrees btdc... just a guess. On the timing cover, there is just a v-shaped mark, which I'm guessing is the timing mark..m I see nothing else. Can anyone else confirm the markings and tell me what I point the timing ligjt at? I'm trying to upload pics... the photos are too large. Thanks in advance!

Ayuh,.... Those holes are balance holes, not timin' marks,....

Look for a line across the side of the balancer,....

You'll need an adjustable timin' light, as the marks only mark Tdc,....

Great. Thanks. This line is scribed across the balancer. I assume I match that up with the v-notch on the timing chain cover when I advance the timing light to 8 degrees btdc?

Apparently, you do not have the timing tab that came with a Volvo "BY" motor. If the timing cover has been changed, that mark is TDC and you will need an advance timing light to set the timing correctly. I know Bondo mentioned it...just want you to make sure you need an advance style timing light.

Yep... got it. Set the dial on the light to advance 8 degrees. Going to give it a shot today or tomorrow. Thanks again.

Perhaps I'm not as familiar with the process as I thought. Reading the manual it states to manually set the idle speed to 1000rpm. So I push the throttle up to 1000rpms. Then, I put a jumper wire inside the data link connector and jump the black/white to the black. This shuts off the electronic spark advance. Couple of questions with this...
What do I jump with? I looked into making a jumper wire but I can't find the pin heads. Can I just strip some wire and push it into the pin holes? Very small holes.
Second, once jumped, I would assume that I would lose rpms. If so, do I bump the throttle back up to 1000 rpms or was that just done initially to keep the motor from dying?
Lastly, when using the timing light I just want to confirm that I turn the dial on the timing light to 8 degrees advance correct? That way when my timing marks line up at tdc the light has been adjusted to 8 degrees btdc. I think the more I read into it the more I'm confusing myself! Lol. Sorry for all the amateur questions. .. I just want to make sure I get this right. Thanks again!

I have what right? Bump rpms up to 1000 if it dies and how do I jump the wires?
You jump the connector pins with a small wire like it says to do in the manual. Yes, you need to keep it at 1000 RPMs.
