somehow both a cog in the starter planetary wheels and a couple of cogs on the flywheel ring is ripped off, so I have to replace the starter AND the flywheel ring gear.
Should I try and leave the bellhousing in the boat when lifting the engine out or just remove that too?
Still can't understand how the cogs ripped in the first place, do any of you have an idea?
It's a 5.0Gi and a DPS outdrive from 1999

Pull the outdrive off (40min) then pull the engine (2hr.) I can't image doing it in the boat. Good luck Dave-R

What Dave said, Did it come apart when starting it? What caused it to break.....Possible hydrolock? I's pull the plugs and check for water......

What Grub said. Is it running fine? How are the exhaust manifolds, when they develop leaks they can cause a hydrolock situation because water gets in the cylinders. I speak from experience......
