i purchased a project 1998 chaparral last year with a volvo 4.3 gl . oil looked clean and started just fine . previous owner said engine overheated and he shut it down. just got to work on it replaced thermostat and melted exhaust hoses. put cups on and fired it up . ran really good but noticed a few other leaks so shut down and decied to change oil while fixing leaks. oil came out cloudy so thought maybe was from sitting so long. put fresh oil in to flush engine before replacing oil filter and good fresh oil. when i went to start it it hydro locked on me . going to pull plugs tommorrow but was wondering just how water can get inti cylinders with cups on and what else i might want to check while tearing into it all

Cracked Block, Cracked Head, cracked Intake manifold, Bad head gasket, bad intake manifold gasket are ways water gets into the oil. Cracked intake, cracked head, cracked exhaust manifolds, are some of the ways water gets into the head

You said you bought it last year. Did you have it winterized?
