290 Penta Outdrive, questions about engines.

Hey all. I have an 84 Skipjack 24 with the 290 Penta outdrive and a badly seized 350 V8. Thinking about swapping something a bit more modern/efficient for a power plant. Even maybe a diesel. What is this outdrive rated/geared/designed for? Can I put a 4.3 or diesel engine on this?

IF you can find a diesel that will adapt to your drive it will hold it. The v-6 I think the mounts might need to be moved??? and the flywheel might not fit??
The early 80's used a lightweight truck block with a 2 piece rear seal and a different crank.
I learned from the Volvo techs that that drive can handle up to 700hp.
Saw a 503 or 513 Buick hooked to one and it was supercharged and running a bunch of HP.
Just don't slam it into gear at 3000rpm
