My question is what lower units will bolt onto this motor. I was told any eninrude or johnson 35 hp from 1958 to 1963 will work but I would like to narrow it down if possible.

Post some pictures so we can see what you're working with. Then we can offer better suggestions and ideas...

I imagine when they said "ANY" eninrude or johnson 35 hp from 1958 to 1963, they meant it. You could add OMC and possibly Gale to the list also. I believe you want the type of lower that the gear box splits horizontally along the propeller shaft and the screws to hold it together are inserted from the bottom. There are lots on eBay. Your limitations are price and condition. I'd imagine iboats sells all the parts for it also.

Actually, that's not quite correct. You would want a lower unit from the 1957 & 1958 Johnrude 35s with the SINGLE WALL exhaust housing, and 1960s era 33hp models (28hp models might work, too). Avoid the lowers from Johnrude 40hp models, as well as 35s with the DOUBLE WALL exhaust housing (looks fatter due to a second outer housing). Easiest way to tell them apart is the ones that WON'T fit will have TWO tubes coming out of the water pump housing.

I hope the photos came through ok. I've been looking at these lower units, more photos,
1959 evinrude lark lower unit #35517,
1958 EVINRUDE 35514 35HP LOWER GEARCASE DRIVE UNIT BOAT MOTOR LARK JOHNSON OMC and
1956 Evinrude Johnson Big Twin 30 hp Gearcase / Lower Unit - Turns easily 376767.
They all look the same, I'll include photos in the same order.
I've also been told that Montgomery Ward of the same vintage were made by gale and parts are interchangeable. Needless to say my confusion is growing.....

The third lower unit will fit. The first two will NOT, as they are the two tube water pump type units. If you had a top view of either of those units, you'd see the shape difference, particularly near the rear bolt hole.

I would try to find one like the third one from a 35hp, as they changed the pinion bearing of the gear case along about then to a beefier set-up.

Include all Gale-built 35 and 40 hp models. They do have the stronger pinion bearings. Gale-built 25hp models will fit, but like the 30hp do not have the improved bearing. Same goes for the 28hp---old bearing style like the 25/30hp.
