1972 sears 7hp wont start

ok first off this is my first outboard don't know much about them I just bought a 1972 sears eska 7hp model #217-58870 I cant get it to start it has good spark and gas is getting to the carb and bowl but not to the plug what could cause that it wont even start with starting fluid even though that is bad on them does it have to be set a certain way to start or what thanks

Do you have the twist grip lined up in the start position? That allows the butterfly to crack open to let fuel and air into the cylinder. Also pull the carb and check the reed assembly.

Can you remove the carb, take it apart and clean it....the main jets may be plugged with trash....very common problem...

Won't even start with starting fluid.....sounds like an extremely weak spark, starting fluid should make it run even for a second. Check compression and see if cylinder is flat.
