?1950's Hiawatha/Gambles 5 HP?need help identifying

Hi, my name is Jesse, this is my first post to iboats. I am trying to identify which year this Hiawatha 5HP outboard was manufactured. Where do I look for this information? All I have is the model # 450MI25-7973A, and the name Gambles and Western Auto Supply. It does have a serial number on the plate: 541229. And the number on the block is 591042.
Also, what is the best way to test compression? I hooked a guage to the lower cynlinder plug hole and pulled the rope. The guage barely moved. I'm not sure if the guage is bad or if I am doing something wrong because the other vintage outboards I tested did the same thing. Thank you for any information and help. Jesse

1954 5hp made by Gale and sold at Gambles Dept. stores and later made by Scott Atwater from 56 to 61. I do have the repair manual for it in PDF format if you would like a copy. Send me a private message with your email and I will shoot ya a copy.

It is a Gale model 5D10. A popular model, they sold tons of them under various brand names. Many are still running.
