Was running..Stored 8+ years. Cleaned carb, replaced duck bill pump. New plugs @ .30. Cleaned all ignition contacts on flywheel and magneto. It will only crank and run with the top cylinder plug wire taken off..when i put the boot on the top while running, it will shut off??? Both cylinders and plugs fire when taken out and grounded? Any thoughts?

Perhaps one plug is defective.Try switching them.
Have you tried to just hold the plug wire close to the plug to see if it will arc?
do you know if it's a Force or Eska Or perhaps even a Merc.

Having no clue as to what / who the motor is, or what type of ignition system it has, I have to wonder if it is possible that the top one could be out of time, and firing as the piston is on it's upstroke, fighting the power stroke on the other? Just a wild guess.

Or some kind of exhaust feedback problem. An even wilder guess. In fact, pretty far out.

I had a couple of those years ago and somehow Tecumseh comes to mind. My wires may be crossed but that's the only thing that comes to mind.

Two cycle mania you are exactly right because I have an old sears 5 hp with the Tecumseh, and the only diff in the two carbs are basically throat size.

Sounds like the insulation on your ignition wires might be bad. I'd replace them.
