Hello Everyone,
I have a 1950 Elgin 5hp Model 571.58531 and I need replacement coils. I disassembled the motor and the black plastic on the coils was falling off. After watching the You Tube video, I tested the coils with a multimeter and had a good reading with the two small wires. When I tested the plug wire with one of the others I had nothing. I tested the plug wire all the way to the coil and it tested good. Now the coils I took off have a 5/8" center laminate. What coils can I buy that would work. Thanks again

Wico magneto, right? I don't think Elgin ever used Phelon (Repco) mag, but not sure.

Yeah, I see you posted on another forum also. Larson Outboard Service may have some (Martin) coils that will fit. They won't be cheap.

Thanks everyone for all of your help but this project has come to a screeching halt. When I opened up the motor I got worried when I started seeing how many poor repairs were made. I will sell this motor on Craigslist for parts. I know there has got to be some folks near Medical Lake who need parts. Now I have to find a Carb intake cover for a 1941 Western Flyer 5hp.
