Sears Outboard

I've just acquired a motor. The label says "SEARS 1997A 5A 175478".

I too would appreciate any information on this vintage motor.

I agree, it is a 1975, made by Eska for Sears of Canada. Has a Tecumseh powerhead.

Wow, thanks for all the replies guys. Nowhere on forums anywhere could I find that model number.

I haven't had time to dig into it yet, and don't even own a boat to put it on!
I note that on the leg casting it says "made in USA", but other than that and the name plate, no other data. Haven't removed the starter or cowl yet.
I note it does not have a twist throttle, rather a lever on the front. As well, it has a built-in tank on top, and a connector for larger fuel tank.
I don't know if it ever had decals on the cowl, there's non visible now, even though the stickers for fuel, choke, etc are still there.

I see that it has no clutch nor FWD/REV selector, and that the 2-blade prop is always engaged. It seems you just turn the whole motor around to get reverse. Interesting.

brin-buster, I sure would appreciate being able to see the PDF repair manual for this motor before I do anything to it - like try to start it!

shoot me an email address and I will send you a copy. You are correct about spinning it 180 for reverse. The engine is air cooled like a lawn mower but has a water pump in the leg to cool the leg and it will spray out the exhaust as a mist. they are simple motors but work well. parts are readily available. except for the solid state ignition mod on the tecumseh. Pray it has spark LOL.

Do not turn it over with the spark plug wire disconnected, or at least a proper spark gap established.

I would love a copy of those manuals. One of my employees got one and he could really use some help with it, he wants to do it on his own time to learn more. I would love to help him.

It has a solid state ignition and you could fry it and then your screwed...:facepalm:
