5.5 sears ted williams

Hello all, I have a sears game fisher boat that came with the motor. Running the model of the boat I came up with a 77 or 78 model year. The motor kept dying so pulled the carb apart found out the fuel pump was bad. Got it all replaced and it fires up OK but it doesn't idle very low, when it trys to it sounds like it backs fires a couple times andthen dies. The thing runs like a beast when the prop is off bit when you engage the prop it seems to load up pretty good and I only can get up to 5mph. Seems like I should be able to go faster
