Hi,
I recently acquired a Ted Williams 4.5 hp outboard (tecumsah motor) and while it looks in pretty good shape it has not run in a while. I am going through and replacing/checking things as necessary but i cannot for the life of me get the gear oil plug out... I'm hoping it's not some wacky left hand thread thing and I've been turning it the wrong way this whole time but regardless, anyone have any tips on getting it out? i put some wd-40 around the edges hoping to loosen it up but no luck thus far...
thanks
Also, while on the subject, I have some 90 weight gear oil at home already but apparently it's best to use "marine grade" how important is that?

Hi I had the same problem on my 7.5. All I did was take a wood chisel and put it in the slot while I locked vice grips on the chisel. Then I tapped the top of the chisel while turning the chisel using the pliers for leverage. And using marine grade gear lube oil is very important. They sell quarts of it at advanced auto parts for 5 bucks.
