I have an elgin 14.1 hp that will only crank if one of the spark plugs is out of it..while out if you try putting the sparkplug back in it kills the engine...I know common knowledge about boat motors but not to this degree any help would be greatly appreciated

Re: 61 elgin

From what I can gather your saying that the motor will run on one cylinder and than stall when you add the other plug? Most two cylinder outboards will run on one cylinder; some better than others. Idle and high end won't be great but they do seem to run in mid range. Occasionally they will stall. If this is indeed the case with your motor; when you add the plug the added burden of compression on the dead cylinder is enough to push it over the edge and stall. It's now working too hard. Sounds like you're not getting spark to the offending cylinder. Check the usual suspects; points, condenser and coil. I have run a number of motors on one cylinder but never with the plug out but that's my take on the situation.
